New Guiness Advert

I haven't seen this advert on TV or anything yet but did come across it on the web. Seems a very extreme contrast to Guinness adverts of old. In fact fr me it just doesn't sit with the brand at all. Perhaps this is a time of change for Guinness in an attempt to broaden their market reach. They are market leader by far in their own stout market and perhaps this is an attempt to try and break into the younger lager market sector.

Chip Shop Awards 2008

The winners have been announced for this year's Chip Shop Awards and I believe it is one of the best years yet for the awards. This could be down to the increasing popularity of the awards or maybe it is just a good year for the designers.

The full collection of award winners is available at http://www.chipshopawards.com/nominations but here are a few of my favourites...

Winner of the Chairman's Award
For me this typifies the style of design I aspire to produce, simple but brilliant. It's the type of design that makes you think...how did I not think of that?! As aspiring designers I think most designs should pose this question.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best Charity Advertisement

A very beautifully clean way of approaching the subject of blood donation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best Use of Bad Taste

OK so these are really un-pc but they did exactly what the designers wanted them to do, make people laugh! The funny thing about the Shannon bed one is conversations that took place at the time of her discovery within our creative department at work which completely revolved around similar jokes...if only we'd took the decision to mock some of them up!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Best Ambient Media

This for me is brilliant just for the fact that the designer here has probably seen this place and thought to himself/herself that they can use this for this very type of advert. It is the ability to gage situations and environments that can make someone a good photographer and from which good design develops.

Reject of the Year

Now this personally is up there with the best this year. This could be due to the fact that in my time at HuetAminto in Manchester we had the Wembley Stadium account and so it is a brand that I hold in high regard. Another simple idea however that is just brilliantly executed. My only question would be that it could be too clever for it's intended audience.

Superlambananas

I've mentioned the madness of the Superlambananas in response to Francesca's post on the Elephant's dotted around Norwich city centre.

http://francescabennett.blogspot.com/2008/07/go-elephants.html

Next week marks the end of the Superlambanana's invasion of Liverpool's streets. At that point they will all be auctioned off for charity. The link here is for the official site of the Superlambananas where you can download the trails and try and get your picture taken with 120 of them...quite a task however as there are Superlambananas as far away from Liverpool as Mael Famau mountain in Wales and even London!

The whole scheme has actually brought a lot of fun to the city and when I was home this weekend there were families following the trail and getting there pictures taken with them. It really is a scheme that has got everyone involved and made everyone intrigued as to where they are all hidden.

All in all a lot of publicity for a sculpture first created by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo for the Arts Transpenine in 1998. Ten years on and it's still going strong in Liverpool.

ESPN

The following are a set of adverts by ESPN to promote it's sports channels. The concept is nice but for me the execution is not quite there. OK so they are trying to promote that there are a lot of different sports on ESPN and you have to search through the channels to find them but I really think that they should have kept to one sport per poster. If anything the meaning is lost by having "Soccer" hidden in tennis balls and "Rugby" hidden in basketballs. Would it not have made more sense to have the relevant sport hidden in their own balls?
